Accreditation
Faculty Accreditation
The accreditation of faculty members in the PPGBC is carried out through the evaluation of requests by the Collegiate, according to Resolution PPGBC/UFPI No. 9 of October 4, 2024. Faculty members are classified into three categories (as per CAPES Ordinance No. 81, June 3, 2016):
Permanent Faculty: Faculty members who engage in teaching activities at the postgraduate and/or undergraduate levels; participate in research projects of the PPG; supervise master's or doctoral students in the PPG, duly accredited as supervisors by the institution; and have a functional-administrative link with the institution or qualify under the exceptional conditions stated in CAPES Ordinance No. 81, June 3, 2016.
Visiting Faculty: Faculty members or researchers with a functional-administrative link to other institutions, whether Brazilian or foreign, who are released, through a formal agreement, from their duties with that institution to collaborate, for a continuous period and under full-time dedication, in research projects and/or teaching activities in the program, and may also act as supervisors and participate in extension activities.
Collaborating Faculty: Other members of the program’s faculty who do not meet the criteria to be classified as permanent faculty or visiting faculty, including postdoctoral fellows, but who systematically participate in research projects or teaching or extension activities and/or supervise students, regardless of whether they have a link to the institution.
How to Apply for Faculty Accreditation in PPGBC?
Faculty members interested in requesting accreditation in the PPGBC should submit the following documents (template available here), which will be reviewed by the Collegiate::
Request Letter for Accreditation: A letter signed by the applicant, indicating the desired research line within the Program, the preferred category (permanent, collaborator, or visiting), the curriculum link on the Lattes Platform, the work plan, and the list of study areas for dissertation projects that the applicant intends to supervise in PPGBC (template available here).
Proposal for Academic Activities: A proposal outlining the academic activities to be undertaken by the applicant in the Program, including: Academic goals plan, considering available research infrastructure and funding; Collaboration with other faculty members in the Program or other programs; Courses to be taught; Intended supervision activities; Expected scientific output for a 24-month period after becoming a faculty member in PPGBC.
Academic Production Evaluation Spreadsheet: A filled-in evaluation spreadsheet (template available here), including all articles published in the last four years (including the current year and the previous four years).
If a public servant not linked to UFPI: A letter of approval from the immediate supervisor, agreeing to the accreditation of the faculty member in PPGBC.
If a visiting faculty member: A fixed-term employment contract with the institution or a scholarship granted for this purpose by the institution or a funding agency.
What will be analyzed by the PPGBC Collegiate for the evaluation of accreditation requests?
The decision regarding accreditation requests by the PPGBC Collegiate must consider the merits of the request as well as the strategic planning of the Program. Therefore, the Collegiate may reject proposals with merit for accreditation if they are not considered aligned with and/or strategic for the Program. The following criteria will be analyzed to make decisions regarding accreditation requests:
The alignment of the applicant’s areas of expertise with the Program’s research lines;
The alignment of the proposed academic activities with the curriculum and the desired profile for professionals trained by the Program;
The scientific production of the applicant in the four-year period immediately preceding the request date, according to the Lattes curriculum, as outlined in Article 3;
The overlap of study areas for dissertation projects that each faculty member intends to supervise in the PPGBC and those of other faculty members in the Program, to minimize conflicts of interest;
The parity between the number of faculty members linked to each of the Program’s research lines;
The most recent Lattes curriculum update, no later than two (2) months before the request;
Compliance with CAPES Ordinance No. 81, of June 3, 2016, or any subsequent equivalent document;
In the case of a request for accreditation as a collaborator faculty member, the proportion of collaborator and permanent faculty members will also be considered, according to the rules of the Biodiversity area of CAPES in effect at the time, and the Program’s interests, at the discretion of the Collegiate.
What is the minimum academic production criterion to request accreditation?
The academic production of faculty applicants must align with the Biodiversity area of CAPES as well as with the research lines of the PPGBC. Therefore, the applicant must achieve a minimum score of 250 points in qualified publications (in the four years prior to the request, including the current year), according to the current CAPES criteria at the time of the accreditation request. For the calculation of the score, the applicant's publications will be evaluated based on the classification of journals through the Qualis Referência system, or an equivalent format in updates by CAPES, with points assigned per stratum for each article as follows (later weighted proportionally based on the number of PPGs to which the faculty member is accredited):
A1—100 points;
A2—87.5 points;
A3—75 points;
A4—62.5 points;
B1—50 points;
B2—37.5 points.
In the case of articles published in journals not included in the Qualis Referência system, the Collegiate will evaluate their equivalence with the journal classification, considering their impact factor and/or other bibliometric indices. Only journals with a corresponding percentile of 35% or higher will be accepted, according to the current rules of the Biodiversity area of CAPES. At the discretion of the Collegiate, publications in journals without relevance to the CAPES Biodiversity area may be disregarded.
Considering the criteria from the Biodiversity evaluation form, for articles with more than six authors, the production will be fully scored if the faculty member is the first, last, or corresponding author; otherwise, it will be penalized by 50% of the points as described in §1 if these conditions are not met.
All faculty members must submit to the PPGBC Coordination their academic production evaluation spreadsheet (template available here), filled out by the applicant, including all articles published in the last four years (not counting the current year).
Reaccreditation
The reaccreditation of faculty members in the Program will be conducted through a performance evaluation by the Collegiate, considering the following minimum criteria:
Scientific production, as required for accreditation requests;
For faculty members accredited for three or more years at the time of reaccreditation, completion of supervision of at least one student in the Program;
For faculty members accredited for less than three years at the time of reaccreditation, completion or ongoing supervision of at least one student in the Program;
Regular participation in the Program’s academic activities, including annual participation in at least one course;
Updating of the Lattes curriculum, according to the requirements of the CAPES Biodiversity area and annual guidelines from the PPGBC Coordination.
All faculty members regularly accredited in the Program must request reaccreditation within 15 (fifteen) days after the start of the Postgraduate academic period at UFPI, always in the first semester of the first and third years of the CAPES evaluation quadrennial.
For the 2025-2028 quadrennial: by March 25, 2025.
