About the Program
Presentation
The Stricto Sensu Graduate Program in Biodiversity and Conservation (PPGBC) was institutionally approved by Resolution CEPEX/UFPI No. 108, on July 11, 2019, in the academic modality, being linked to the Pro-Rectorate of Graduate Education and the Amílcar Ferreira Sobral Campus of the Federal University of Piauí, headquartered in Floriano, Piauí. Subsequently, PPGBC (course code: 21001014084M9) was recognized by CAPES through Ordinance No. 539, on June 15, 2020. Thus, the Graduate Program in Biodiversity and Conservation - PPGBC began its activities on October 5, 2020, with the first group of master's students in the Program.
The Program was proposed with a single area of concentration, bearing the same name: Biodiversity and Conservation. There are two research lines: (1) Knowledge of biodiversity; and (2) Use and conservation of biodiversity.
Mission
To provide high-level training and ensure the proper qualification of human resources committed to ethics, scientific development, responsible dissemination of knowledge, and the sustainability of the relationships between humans and the environment, capable of conducting research on various aspects of biodiversity studies.
Objectives
I – Contribute to the scientific development of the state of Piauí and UFPI by conducting research on biodiversity;
II – Contribute to the training of qualified human resources in the state of Piauí;
III – Be recognized as a center of excellence in academic production and student training.
Vision
The PPGBC aims to be recognized as a center for the training of qualified human resources for the study of biodiversity in the state of Piauí, contributing to making UFPI a regional center of excellence in teaching, research, outreach, and human resource training, capable of establishing fruitful interactions with other research centers in Brazil and around the world.
Values
I – Ethics, citizenship, democracy, social inclusion, and respect for diversity: this commitment expects multiple forms of respect and inclusion for all within the PPGBC and the society in which it is embedded.
II – Expansion, updating, and dissemination of knowledge and professional training: thus, the aim is to enhance the formation of qualified professionals, encouraged to engage in academic careers.
III – Strengthening research and integration with undergraduate programs: the goal is to value the continuity of the training process for researchers, starting in undergraduate studies and continuing in postgraduate studies.
IV – Quality and efficiency in work management: the program aims to foster interaction, responsibility, and cooperation among the program’s coordination, administration, faculty, and students.
Professional Profile and the PPGBC Context
Graduates of the Master’s Program in Biodiversity and Conservation will be trained to engage in teaching, research, and outreach activities related to biological diversity, its use, and conservation. It is expected that these professionals will easily integrate into the job market in higher education institutions, research institutes, biological collections in museums, public agencies (e.g., IBAMA, ICMBio, environmental agencies), and civil society organizations (e.g., non-governmental organizations - NGOs, environmental consultancy companies).
Graduates will be equipped to meet current demands related to sustainable development, with potential roles in NGOs, environmental education initiatives, wildlife conservation (e.g., IBAMA’s Wildlife Rescue Centers and zoos), environmental impact studies and reports (EIA/RIMA), environmental management and planning, wildlife management and rescue in large infrastructure projects, industrial or commercial enterprises (e.g., small hydroelectric plants), and in conservation unit management plans. They may also engage in bioprospecting through the investigation of biodiversity use by traditional communities and animal or plant genetic improvement initiatives.
It is also expected that PPGBC graduates will continue their educational journey by enrolling in doctoral programs in other graduate programs across Brazil or abroad. Continuing education through various programs and institutions is believed to positively and significantly contribute to the formative process and professional development of researchers.
